Grand Rapids 11, Duluth East 1

GRAND RAPIDS— The Thunderhawks opened up Bob Streetar Field for the first time this season Tuesday and 10-runned Duluth East in a five-inning ball game. Klous Jones got the start for Grand Rapids, pitching a complete game while allowing four hits and one earned run. Head coach Bill Kinnunen likes what he saw from his starting pitcher on Tuesday.

“Klous got the ball down after the first couple innings,” said Kinnunen.

The leadoff runner scored for the Greyhounds in the top of the first but Klous settled in and took over after the first frame.

“He changed speeds well and moved the ball around. He started getting ahead of guys like he should later in the game,” added Kinnunen.

Klous got plenty of run-support from the Thunderhawk bats who tallied 11 hits in the ball game.

Dominic Broberg got the scoring started for Grand Rapids when Gavin Moen singled to drive him in for one of Moen’s three RBI on the day.

Catcher Jake Garski had himself a day without recording a hit. Garski showed off his disciplined approach at the plate by reaching base three times on three walks and stole a base while scoring three of the T’Hawks 11 runs. Ari Lamppa also moved the bases without recording a hit, putting the ball in play in all three plate appearances to drive in three runs of his own. Shortstop Caleb Gunderson also drove in three runs in four at-bats on Tuesday for Grand Rapids.

Kinnunen liked what he saw from Gunderson as well:

“Caleb has been seeing the ball well all season and hitting line-drives all over the ballpark.

The Thunderhawks improved to 3-2 in the early weeks of the season and will face a tough test from the 6-1 Princeton Tigers Friday night on the road.
