Mankato Police Department Celebrates 22% Female Workforce, Exceeding National Average
In a stride toward gender diversity in law enforcement, the Mankato Department of Public Safety is boasting a higher-than-usual percentage of women on their force. As reported by the department on Facebook, a proud 22% of their staff are female, surpassing the national average which lingers at a meager 13%. The announcement came in conjunction with the Minnesota Association of Women Police Conference, a recent gathering that saw several of Mankato’s female officers in attendance.
Notebook: Coaches ask to move softball finals to U of M
The Minnesota State High School League last year went along with a request from softball coaches to extend the state tournament to three days. The first edition of the expanded tournament will be next month at Caswell Park in North Mankato. A new request might require a little more persuasion. Flood plains front and center
During its regular March 11 meeting, the Janesville City Council adopted and approved a new ordinance which follows language from the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Under the law, any flood plains within city limits must be identified in order to make federal floodplain insurance available for residents or property owners. The council needed to return the ordinance to the DNR by March 27.

Area athletes rack up conference titles at Gopher Conference meet
The Gopher Conference hosted its 2024 conference meet at Maple River High School over the weekend. New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva led area teams, with the girls team finishing as the runners-up with 99 points, and the boys finishing third with 71 points.
