A Glendale police officer shot an armed suspected shoplifter Sunday afternoon outside a  Glendale hardware store, police said.

The officer arrived just after 3:30 p.m. April 28 at the hardware store near 51 st and Myrtle avenues where he found the armed suspect near a bus stop.

“The suspect pointed what appeared to be a weapon at the officer, and the officer discharged his service weapon multiple times striking the suspect,” Glendale police stated in a release.

More officers arrived and took the unidentified suspect into custody. After receiving medical aid at the scene, the suspect was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities shut down 51st Avenue between Glendale and Maryland for several hours during Sunday’s investigation, which was taken over by the Surprise Police Department as part of the West Valley Incident Response Team.
