Empty downtown storefronts push Lake Worth to recruit new merchants
Lake Worth Beach will pay a commercial real estate brokerage to attract higher-class shops to the middle-class city's half-vacant downtown. The Community Redevelopment Agency will contract with West Palm Beach-based Anderson & Carr to recruit "boutique entertainment," "artisanal concepts," shops and restaurants to Lake and Lucerne avenues. The agency will pay the firm up to $175,000. All five CRA board members approved the one-year deal on Oct. 13. "No offense to vape shops and smoke shops — I'm sure they're really great — but we do have quite a bit, and it would be really nice to have some more places to shop," CRA Executive Director Joan Oliva told the board. Anderson & Carr is tasked with persuading businesses in places such West Palm Beach, Delray Beach and Boca Raton to open branches downtown. The firm also plans to look beyond Palm Beach County to places such as Tampa Bay to pitch companies on the small city of 44,000. Representatives for Anderson & Carr told board members they would like to make Lake Worth Beach a destination by attracting restaurants featuring international chefs. Palm Beach Town Council appoints four new faces to planning commission
There's new blood on Palm Beach's Planning and Zoning Commission, now that Town Council members have appointed a freshman class of two regular and two alternate commissioners to the volunteer board. The quartet is joined by investments executive Matthew Ailey, who will serve in a new position on the 10-member commission. He was elevated from his role as alternate member to regular voting member during the council's Oct. 13 meeting. The other just-appointed regular members include landscape designer Mario Nievera and author Jennifer Ash Rudick, as well as the two new alternate commissioners — businessman Kendall Kemper Cox Cheatham and real estate agent John Schuler Jr. All positions carry a three-year term. The updated roster's first meeting will be Nov. 3. The appointees will fill the seats left vacated by former commissioners Marilyn Beuttenmuller, Jorge Sanchez, Martin Klein, Victoria Donaldson and Ailey, with his ascension to a regular member position. Beuttenmuller and Sanchez were term-limited, while Donaldson did not apply for a second term on the board. Council members chose not to reappoint Klein, who had completed the remainder of the regular member position held by Nicki McDonald before her election in March to the Town Council.
