Louisville's bike commuters are facing roadblocks. The city wants to fix them | Exclusive
Justin Mog has never owned a car. He doesn't even have a driver's license. He gets virtually anywhere he needs to go on "Root Beer," his burnt orange road bike. A Louisville resident, Mog bikes 3.5 miles to work every day. When he needs to make a big shopping run, he soups up his two-wheeler with a 6-foot trailer. For longer trips, he takes buses and trains. Mog has lived in Oberlin, Ohio, and Madison, Wisconsin, before settling in Louisville and becoming assistant to the provost for sustainability initiatives at the University of Louisville. While he considers Oberlin and Madison highly bikeable, he said much of the cyclist infrastructure he's encountered in Louisville has been recreationally-focused. "I think we have done amazing work getting people access to bike lanes," Mog said. "But that can still be intimidating for a lot of people and there's certainly still many neighborhoods in our community that don't have bike facilities." Mog's experience is not uncommon. Bikers frequently scrutinize Louisville for its lack of bike infrastructure and cyclist safety, advocating for safer commutes and ways to get around. Who's responsible for cleaning up after car crash? Louisville has new law
Who is responsible for cleaning up debris left in the roadway following a car crash? It's a question Louisville Metro Council members have said needs to be addressed – and they did so Oct. 15 by passing a law that clarifies who is responsible for cleaning up car parts, broken glass and other debris that oftentimes is strewn in and around the road after a motor-vehicle accident. Council members Crystal Bast, Josie Raymond and Markus Winkler are the main sponsors of the ordinance, though several others signed on as co-sponsors, Metro Council records show . Winkler told The Courier Journal in an interview that car crashes often leave debris in roadways, street shoulders, medians and bike lanes, creating an eyesore and safety hazard for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. "When you've got vehicle debris, other trash laying on off-ramps, medians, it makes the whole place look not very good, and then that's a cost that we all bear when we have to send Public Works out to clean it," Winkler said. "So what we want to do is make sure people who are responsible for generating the trash are the ones who are cleaning it up as much as possible." Here's
