First Snow Arrives Earliest in Denver by October 17 and Billings by October 22, While Chicago Waits Until November 26, New York Until December 12 and Dallas Until January 12
DENVER, COLORADO — With frost already showing up across the northern U.S., many people are asking the next big question: when does the first snow usually arrive? A new map based on 1991 to 2020 climate normals shows the average date of the first measurable snowfall across the country. For much of the northern Rockies and Plains, the first snow typically arrives in October or early November. The Midwest and Northeast usually wait until November or December, while cities farther south like Dallas often do not see their first snow until January, and places like Phoenix, Houston and Orlando rarely see measurable snow at all.

Some areas will be a few degrees cooler than Monday, but most locations stay dry and warm. The mountains have a better chance of hit-or-miss showers and a few weak thunderstorms during the afternoon. A more meaningful pattern change may arrive Sunday into early next week with a cooler and windy storm system.
