Giant step for East Meadow
All things considered, while the team finished at .500, the East Meadow boys’ lacrosse team had a pretty good season. The Jets’ coach, Joe Cataldo, was in his first varsity season with the program. In just one season, he took a team that went 1-14 in 2023 to 8-8 overall and 6-6 in Conference A this spring, without having seniors spread out all over the field.
Sayville’s Jack Coan shines in Canadian Football League debut
Greater Sayville coverage is funded in part by The Shed, your scratch kitchen for brunch and dinner daily at 21 Main St. in West Sayville. It may have been just a pre-season game, but Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback Jack Coan could not have been happier to be back behind center in any kind of professional game for the first in nearly 400 days.
Late Farmingdale goal beats Oceanside
The Oceanside girls’ lacrosse team went from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows in a matter of seconds. After Natalie Paul tied the game for the Sailors in shocking fashion with just under two minutes remaining in regulation, Emily Markovina scored her fourth goal of the contest with 17.7 ticks left as conference-champion Farmingdale withstood the late Oceanside rally to win 12-11 in the quarterfinals of the Nassau A playoffs last Friday evening at Don Snyder Stadium.

Baldwin barely misses playoffs
Some unfortunate luck cost the Baldwin boys’ lacrosse team a fourth straight playoff berth, but the senior-laden team managed to end the season on a winning note. Baldwin entered the home stretch of the season poised to claim the final playoff spot in Class A before Hicksville pulled off a surprise upset against Oceanside to narrowly edge out the Bruins earn the eight seed by one game over the Bruins. The ninth place finish in the 14-team Conference A was also made unlucky by the arrival this season of Herricks due to higher enrollment, which took up another of the few available playoff spots.

Perfect regular season a Malverne first
For the Malverne boys’ tennis team, the 2024 regular season was simply perfect. This year’s group became the first in program history to run the table from start to finish by going 14-0 this spring while winning the Conference IV championship. The Mules, who shared the conference title with Freeport during coach Heath Hocoluk’s first season at the helm in 2022, joined Manhasset and Lynbrook as the only Nassau teams to not suffer a loss during the regular season.
