Results are in for Great Barrington’s town election
None of the 10 races on the Southern Berkshire community’s ballot were contested, leading incumbents to easily secure re-election per preliminary numbers released by Great Barrington Wednesday. Eric Gabriel and Garfield Reed will return to the selectboard for their second three-year terms, and town moderator Michael Wise was re-elected to another year guiding Great Barrington through public meetings. Newcomer William Brinker secured a seat as town constable, while non-incumbents Sharon Shaloo and Laura Mars were elected as library trustees. Pedro Pachano was re-elected for another three-year term on the planning board. Voters approved the ballot’s sole question, which would exempt the cost of capital projects like improvements to town properties from Proposition 2½, the state law that limits the amount of property tax a municipality can raise through real and personal property taxes in a given year. You can find the complete results at here.

CATSKILL, N.Y. (WRGB) — A Catskill family is left picking up the pieces after a landslide last week took their home and everything inside. PETER MOST: Great Barrington Town Meeting — the good, the bad, and the ugly
Great Barrington’s schizophrenic 2024 Town Meeting offered an all-you-can-eat town politics buffet, although few residents showed up to partake. Five percent of eligible town voters (253 residents) observed unequal portions of the good, the bad, and the ugly. Let’s consider each in turn. Town Meeting had a little...
Escaped Upstate, New York Bull Rescued Thanks to Heatseeking Drone
A young Angus bull escaped from its Upstate, New York farm earlier this week and took several days before getting rescued. We're used to seeing animals in the element around Upstate, New York. Seeing a bear, deer, snakes, and skunks running down the road isn't uncommon. But when a bull is running around town, it will definitely make you do a double-take.
One-on-one with consultant Mark Hermanson, on the Housatonic Rest of River remediation plan
Berkshire County — With a proliferation of documents produced by General Electric Company (GE) in conjunction with a 2020 agreement, or permit, to remediate the Housatonic River — a waterway GE polluted by depositing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from its Pittsfield transformer plant — environmental group Housatonic River Initiative (HRI) sought the advice of an expert. Using Technical Assistance Grant (TAG) funds awarded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to help those involved in Superfund site cleanup plans understand the project, representatives of the organization found what they needed in Mark Hermanson, an expert in environmental chemistry who specializes in contaminated industrial sites. His experience is legendary, not just in the U.S. but worldwide as he serves as an Associate Professor at the University Centre in Svalbard, an Arctic island belonging to Norway, and is the namesake of a consulting firm he founded.

Happy Mother’s Day from Mid-Hudson News
The entire team at Mid-Hudson News and I would like to wish a Happy Mother’s Day to all the wonderful moms in the Hudson Valley. Our mothers are the backbone of our families: They are caring, loving, patient and hardworking, and it is important that we recognize all that they selflessly do for us today and every day. My mom taught me so much and has always been there for me, and my wonderful wife, Erin, has done the same for our three children.
Keeping it fresh in Great Barrington: Farmers’ Market opens for new season
Great Barrington — The town’s Farmers’ Market opened for a new season on Saturday, May 11 at its location at 18 Church Street. According to Farmers’ Market Manager Dennis Iodice, this is the 34th year for the market, with 28 vendors participating this year. “The market has endured for all these years because we have amazing food, we have an arts market next to us, and we have amazing vendors,” Iodice told The Berkshire Edge. “The market has become kind of a third space in Great Barrington. You have your home, you have your work, and you have the Farmers’ Market as a place to be with your community.”
