A Cincinnati restaurant resurrects one of McDonald's biggest failures
Most Cincinnatians are familiar with the story of Lou Groen, the local McDonald's franchisee who invented the Filet-O-Fish. Groen created the sandwich for his Catholic customers during the season of Lent after noticing plummeting sales on Fridays. What you might not know is that Groen's sandwich faced a little competition before it became McDonald's official meatless mainstay. It was something called the Hula Burger. The meatless cheeseburger was modest to say the least: quite simply a slice of grilled pineapple with cheese on a bun. It was introduced in the 1960s by another McDonald's franchisee named Ray Kroc, who would go on to become the fast-food empire's president. For a short time, McDonald's featured both the Hula Burger and the Filet-O-Fish on their menus until, ultimately, Groen's sandwich edged the Hula Burger out of existence. Fortunately for fast-food history buffs, a Downtown restaurant is offering a chance to try a Hula Burger for yourself, albeit a version that is likely more delicious than its predecessor. At Mid-City Restaurant , executive chef Joe Cheek marinates thick, fresh pineapple slices in garlic, ginger and soy sauce overnight. Those slices are then seared to order, topped with smoked cheddar cheese and fried onions
