Councilman criticizes Springfield mayor's alternative plan for transit
Springfield has had a new mayor for a year, and one councilman has made accusations that the change in leadership has resulted in less cohesive governance at city hall. Councilman Brandon Jenson spoke critically of Mayor Jeff Schrag at a special Springfield City Council meeting Tuesday, May 26. The comments came within the context of discussions about how the city should approach the future of public transit. An initial referral largely crafted by Jenson was overhauled by Schrag in early May in a move that Jenson described as a "politically palatable 'no'" to transit improvements. Operated by City Utilities, The Bus is one of the few transit systems in the nation operated through a municipal utility company rather than a regional transit authority. In the original referral, submitted in October, Jenson proposed creating a new committee made up of council members, representatives from City Utilities, transit users and employers who benefit from transit, in order to identify funding for the transit master plan's medium-term recommendations and to align incentives and land use with a proposed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route. Schrag turned this proposal on its head with an alternative referral that would instead send the topic solely to council
