After four years of land-use limbo, a Wawa near Middletown will move forward
The great Wawa saga of Asbury Chase, north of Middletown, is finally nearing its end — four and a half years after it began. A proposed location of the popular hoagie and gas station chain at 2256 Dupont Highway had somewhat infamously become one of the oldest pending projects in the county. ...

Memorial Day parade remembers the fallen
CHESTERTOWN — The annual Memorial Day parade in Chestertown honors military service members, specifically those who lost their lives. It’s a chance to reflect on their sacrifice. But it’s also in the aftermath of the Chestertown Tea Party, and it was a small turnout this year. However, that doesn’t rob the importance of it. ...
Collective punishment called into question
Perhaps you recall the humorous definition of chutzpah. A man convicted of killing both of his parents begged the judge for mercy because he was an orphan. In its full-page color ad in the Tidewater Trader, the Republican Party of Kent County has taken a page from this playbook (and the tried-and-true Trumpian victimization scam) and whined loudly that it was “ousted” by the 2024 Tea Party committee. The “ouster” was a response to an adherent of that same Party loitering around its 2023 Tea...
Town of Elkton set to resume street parking enforcement

Chestertown Flasback: A Century-Old Fountain
A minor departure this week: Instead of a historic image, a contemporary look at a historic subject. The fountain pictured here is the only one of Memorial Park’s monuments dedicated to an individual, George B. Wescott, whose daughter, Chestertown resident Harriet L. Hill donated it in memory of her father. It was dedicated on August 8, 1900. The fountain features a large basin on the street-facing side at an appropriate height for thirsty horses with a smaller basin facing the park for people. At one time, it also had a ground-level water station for cats and dogs. The fountain is no longer in use and the spigots have been removed. Images courtesy of the Historical Society of Kent County.
