Georgetown museum hosting Civil War reenactment

GEORGETOWN — The sights and sounds of the Civil War will come to life via reenactment Saturday on the grounds of the Georgetown Historical Society.

With free admission, the public is invited to 510 S. Bedford St. to see camps and infantry and artillery demonstrations, as well as to interact with those portraying Union and Confederate troops who fought in the 1861-65 war.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“We’ll have soldiers. They’ll talk about life and do drills with weapons and march. We do not plan a battle,” said society president Debbie Jones.

“That’s our whole focus, the educational event. We know that everybody likes to see the battles, but we got a late start getting this planned. So, we decided we would make it just totally an educational event and build on it next year.”

She added that she has received confirmation from reenacting groups from North Carolina and Pennsylvania, who will join local actors.

The artillery displays will feature two cannons of the era. Plans also include medical and sewing demonstrations, plus some children’s games.
Additionally, several speakers are scheduled.

Event organizers have extended invitations to local schools.

As far as refreshments, the County Seat Cruisers will sell breakfast and lunch.

And, while admission is free, donations to the Georgetown Historical Society are welcome.

“We invite everybody to come out and enjoy the educational experience,” Ms. Jones said.
