Emporia walks for mental health awareness
Dozens of people donned in green took over Main Street in Emporia on Thursday to recognize mental health awareness month. May has been celebrated as Mental Health Awareness month since 1949 and calls upon people to recognize the important role mental health plays in everyday life and celebrate those who have recovered from their mental illness.
Halifax Community College Small Business Center distributes $2,200 to local artists
On Saturday, three Halifax Community College Small Business Center students received prize money at the Acorn Center for their April 19 Pitch Your Art presentations before a three-judge panel at the same site. Museum memorializes pioneer Black educator
James Solomon Russell’s legacy in Lawrenceville will not be soon forgotten. Russell was born into slavery in 1857 in Mecklenburg County. He received an education at what would later be Hampton University and entered divinity school and the Episcopal Church. In 1888, he founded what is currently known as Saint Paul’s College to offer courses such as English, history, physics, algebra, Bible study as well as industrial training to African-Americans. The school opened with fewer than a dozen students but would eventually grow to nearly 800 at the time of his retirement in 1929, when his son would succeed him as principal.
