The Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City was open only to people on the autism spectrum and their families Thursday night. The event was hosted by the Nassau/Suffolk Autism Society of America, which covered the costs for hundreds of families.

Organizers say special events like this are important for people on the spectrum, because it allows them to enjoy activities in a safe, judgement-free environment.

“They may be afraid of crowds. They may have trouble with a lot of noise or lights or just the business of a place. So we take that stress away,” said Michele Iallonardi, Nassau/Suffolk Autism Society of America executive director.

The organization depends on fundraising to operate its events.
