Smyrna High School teacher arrested following criminal investigation
SMYRNA, Del. – A Smyrna High School teacher has been arrested following a criminal investigation that began in February. We’re told Smyrna Police received a report that 40-year-old Kanika Jackson, a Smyrna HS teacher, was reportedly physically and verbally abusive toward students in class. Jackson was placed on administrative leave, and a thorough investigation was launched. It was learned that on three separate occasions during the school year, Jackson placed her hands on students in a physical manner. In one instance, Jackson allegedly grabbed a student’s hair and pulled it. She also allegedly grabbed a student’s neck and shook them, and in the final incident, she allegedly grabbed a student by the neck and pushed them into a wall.
North East man faces 14 charges, including attempted murder, after firebombing incident
ELKTON — A North East man is being held without bond in the Cecil County Detention Center on 14 charges from the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal for a March firebombing incident. Charles J. Shivery, 41, is charged with 1st and 2nd degree attempted murder, 1st and 2nd degree assault, 1st and 2nd degree arson, reckless endangerment, malicious burning and use and possession of explosive devices. Investigators accuse Shivery of lobbing a homemade explosive device, commonly known as a “Molotov cocktail,” at a home located at 1290 Old Philadelphia Road in North East just before 10 p.m. March 2. Occupants of the home saw the flash outside and were able to extinguish the flames. Afterward they discovered the remnants of an explosive device and contacted police. With assistance from the North East barrack Maryland State Police Apprehension Team, troopers and K9 unit, OSFM arrested Shivery Tuesday morning without incident.
Townsend-area plane crash leaves 1 injured Friday afternoon; police investigating
One person was injured Friday in a plane crash near Townsend, according to Delaware State Police. State police posted on X at 1:47 p.m. that they were on the scene of a plane crash in the 1200 block of Caldwell Corner Road. Officers said they are providing medical assistance and helping federal investigators.
Charges filed against delegate by his son are dismissed
Del. Kevin B. Hornberger faced a second-degree assault charge filed in April by his adult son, Adam Hornberger. The charges were filed through a Cecil County District Court commissioner and later appealed to the Circuit Court of Cecil County. ELKTON — A fire at a residence near Elkton over the weekend caused an estimated $100,000 in damage and displaced one occupant, according to the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal. A passerby called 911 at 7:41 p.m. on Saturday after noticing the burning house in the 100 block of Rock Church Road, off Route 273, north of Elkton, prompting area volunteer fire companies to respond, fire officials said. Man Charged With Raping Family Member
Smyrna Police Department (SPD) investigators recently arrested a 34-year-old man for the armed rape and sexual assault of one of his family members. Officials said on June 1, 2024, SPD officers were dispatched to the home of a resident in the 100 block of Lawn Drive in reference to a sexual assault that had occurred the day prior. Detectives arrived on the scene and assumed the investigation. Detectives discovered that 34-year-old James Wheeler was visiting a family member at the apartment on Saturday.

Two Delaware City Residents Facing Multiple Felonies
On June 8, 2024, at approximately 7:45 PM, a Laurel Police Department officer conducted a traffic stop on Georgetown Road due to a traffic violation. Upon returning to his patrol car to conduct standard checks, the officer discovered that both the driver and passenger had active no-contact orders against each other, related to a pending criminal case in New Castle County police said Saturday. Both individuals were placed under arrest for violating the no-contact order.
