    Feature

Fridley baseball senior captains Josiah Kozicky and Evan Hinnenkamp

    Josiah Kozicky

    Start in baseball

“I was 4 years old when I started playing baseball. I started playing wiffleball in my backyard when I was little and I think I just fell in love with the sport after that.”

    Enjoy most about sport

“My favorite part about baseball is the pregame jitters I get.”

    Most challenging part

“The most challenging part is forgetting about the mistakes and continuing to play through them.”

    Favorite part about position

“My favorite part of my position is I’m involved in a lot of the plays.”

    Best part of team

“The thing I enjoy most about my team is the energy and passion we bring to each game and practice.”

    Pregame routine

“My pregame superstition is I have to run out and touch the centerfield sign.”

Something people might not realize about your sport

“People might not know that failing 70% of the time at the plate is considered good.”

    Top Fridley baseball memory

“My favorite Fridley baseball memory is hitting a leadoff home run and having my teammates meet me at home plate.”

    Evan Hinnenkamp

    Start in baseball

“I started playing baseball when I was 6 years old. Both my parents and my grandfather wanted me to try lots of sports when I was younger; this led to me trying baseball.”

    Enjoy most about sport

“My favorite part about playing baseball is how you can never be perfect in every aspect. There is always something that you have to change in order to throw harder, field better or hit harder. You can make tons of minor adjustments and then choose that they weren’t right for you, so you go back to square one and find a more effective solution to whatever movement you are trying to improve upon.”

    Most challenging part

“The most challenging thing about playing baseball is staying in the right mindset. Whenever you have a bad at-bat or make an error, you have to reset and put yourself back into a positive mindset so that your mistakes are minimal and do not snowball.”

    Favorite part about position

“My favorite part about being a pitcher is being able to control the pace of the game and allowing myself and my fielders to get outs. I like when I am able to be on the mound executing pitches and getting outs, allowing for my team’s offense to take control of the game.”

    Best part of team

“The thing I like most about my team is how we have all grown up playing the sport around one another and have built a bond together that shows during the game. We laugh and make jokes, all while playing the sport that we love.”

    Pregame routine

“I don’t consider myself to be a very superstitious person when it comes to my pregame routine. However, on start days, I always make sure to do my warm up in the same way that I always do. I also have a routine for pregame infield/outfield that I like to do that gets me ready for the game.”

Something people might not realize about your sport

“Things that people do not realize about the sport is that no matter how good of a player you are, you have to have others around you to support your game. Baseball is not a sport where you can have one person win the game, you need a team behind you.”

    Top Fridley baseball memory

“My favorite Fridley Baseball memory was going to Florida to play at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex and being able to pitch in the stadium for the first time.”
