San Joaquin Memorial pitcher Max Mendes had his way against Madera on Tuesday afternoon.

He was in command of his pitches and also had some help from the Panthers’ defensive players behind him as he threw the first perfect game in school history — a 1-0 victory capped by a walk-off single by Nate Etchegoinberry that drove in Donato Blanchette.

“I’m just grateful for the opportunities given to me by playing for Memorial,” Mendes said. “The guys behind me on defense and at the plate. I’m confident in our guys and our coaching to lead us to big wins like that and to have my back throughout.”

Earlier in the game, Mendes was backed by center fielder Bret Wathen’s diving catch to keep the perfect game intact.

Mendes, who will play at Cal State Northridge, said he had no clue he had not allowed a baserunner or a hit until the later innings.

Mendes threw 72 pitches and had eight strikeouts.

After the perfect game, Mendes said he went to dinner with a group of friends.

Mendes said he will remember the diving play and the game-winning run that helped him to perfection.

“I knew the game was over. He (Etchegoinberry) is easily one of the more clutch players in the Valley right now and I just knew he would get the job done,” Mendes said.
