OP-ED: Proposition 44 Would Put a Price on Trust
Oakland’s public conversation about health care must begin with a simple truth: a doctor’s appointment is not the same thing as access to care. For a mother juggling work and child care, access may mean a text-message reminder, a bus pass, an evening appointment, or someone who can explain what Medi-Cal covers. For an older patient managing diabetes, it may mean help scheduling a specialist visit and understanding new medications. For a family that has been dismissed or misunderstood in medical settings, access may begin with meeting a community health worker who knows the neighborhood, speaks their language, and treats their concerns with respect.

The intravenous therapy boom has arrived in Berkeley. Once a niche industry serving celebrities and the ultra-rich, IV hydration therapy is becoming more and more widespread (it’s estimated to become a $3 billion industry this year), even as medical experts say its benefits for healthy people have not been proven and warn of its risks, which could include trauma, bleeding or infection.

It’s flu season. SF vaccinations are off to a slow start
It’s nearly 80 degrees in San Francisco, but flu season is ramping up quickly, and providers are urging residents to get their shots. San Francisco pharmacies and doctors say they have given out fewer flu shots so far this season than they had by the same time last year. The warm weather is likely one culprit, but other factors are at play. Some providers received their supplies of vaccines later than usual, and the Trump administration has dialed back its marketing of the shots, according to The Wall Street Journal (opens in new tab).

I love medicine, and I deeply care for my patients. When insurance only kicks in after you are already sick, how is our community supposed to thrive?
