Abilene residents get free self-service recycling drop off at Sam's
ABILENE, Texas — Abilene residents now have a new Community Recycling Unit at the local Sam's Club, 5550 S. Clack St., the retailer announced Friday. The unit provides residents a free recycling solution for various items, including some that may not be accepted by local curbside programs. Accepted waste streams include aluminum, clear plastic containers, home cleaning and beauty bottles, plastic bags and films and rigid plastic food packaging.

16-year-old passenger killed in Brown County SUV rollover
BROWN COUNTY, Texas — A 16-year-old girl who was a passenger in an SUV died after a rollover crash Thursday night in Brown County. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety's preliminary crash report, the crash happened at 8:15 p.m. Thursday on County Road 225, about five miles south of Brownwood in Brown County.
Scurry County judge declares disaster after 61 earthquakes hit area in seven days
SCURRY COUNTY, Texas — After 61 earthquakes in seven days, Scurry County Judge Dan Hicks, has officially declared a disaster and requesting state assistance. In a social media post, Hicks said "Since the first earthquake that was felt on July 22, 2024 at about 9:38 PM, a 4.9, and a 4.4 at about 9:46 PM to today's 5.0 at about 9:28 AM July 26, 2024, damage has been found throughout Scurry County in businesses and residences."
Another earthquake hits West Texas Friday
SCURRY COUNTY, Texas — Another earthquake hit West Texas Friday morning, causing tremors felt across the area. The United State Geological Survey initially reported the earthquake at 4.8 magnitude on the Richter scale at 9:28 a.m. Friday about 9.2 miles northeast of Hermleigh. Later, the agency said the mainshock of the event was registered at 5.0 on the Richter scale. It was then upgraded to a 5.1 magnitude by the USGS.

Veteran to be laid to rest
The Texas Veterans Land Board is inviting members of the public to attend the funeral of Bob Gilbert Wood at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Abilene. Wood served the U.S Marine Corps from 1960 to 1965 and is a recipient of the Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal. A VLB representative says not many of these funerals happen at the Abilene cemetery, but when they do happen, it is to show not only the community, but the veteran, that they are not forgotten.
