    Division I track and field: Liberty Center girls claim regional championship

    FOSTORIA — The Liberty Center girls just beat out the girls from Coldwater, edging the Cavaliers 59-58 for the team title at the Division III regional track and field competition that wrapped up on Friday night at Fostoria’s Memorial Stadium.

    En route to the win, the LC girls had a total of four girls punch tickets to the upcoming state meet in Dayton next week. After Coldwater, Margaretta (51) finished third in the team standings, Woodmore (50.5) was fourth, and Riverdale (47) fifth.

    Tinora took home the boys regional title with 63 points. Margaretta came in second at 52 points, Wayne Trace (44) finished third, Edgerton (43.5) fourth, and Ottawa Hills (36) fifth.

    The top four competitors in each event advance to the state meet.

    The LC girls were led by first-place finishes from Gracie Miller in the 800 meter run and Emersyn Gerken in the high jump. Gerken cleared 5 feet, 2 inches for the high jump title, while Evergreen’s Alivia Mitchey came in third (5-1), also good enough to qualify for state.

    As for Miller in the 800, she won with a time of 2:17.85. There were two other local girls with qualifying times in the 800, as Woodmore’s Emma Hammer placed second (2:18.09) and Pettisville’s Grace Remington finished third (2:18.23).

    LC added a second place finish from Makayla Meller in the 1,600, posting a time of 5:09.49. The Tigers’ Elle Mohler took fourth (12.65) in the 100 and third (25.96) in the 200 to advance in both events.

    Woodmore’s Azure Travis earned runner-up in each of those events, running the 100 in 12.34 and the 200 in 25.77. Lakota’s Aubrey Vitte also qualified in the 100, finishing third (12.60).

    However, Travis finished at the top in both hurdle races, winning the 100 hurdles in 14.71 and the 300 hurdles in 44.75. Danbury’s Maggie Thompson advanced by finishing third (15.80) in the 100 hurdles.

    A pair of area girls qualified in both the shot put and discus. In the shot, Van Buren’s Courtney Snyder won with a best throw of 37 feet, 7¾ inches, while Northwood’s Breanna Bolden came in third (36-9).

    Van Buren’s Easton Wymer placed third (123-9) and Toledo Christian’s Kaitlyn Ahrendt fourth (123-0) in the discus.

    Gibsonburg’s McKenzie Montgomery took the top spot in the pole vault, clearing 12 feet.

    Local girls took the top three spots in the 3,200 as Danbury’s Emma Redett took first (11:14.52), Patrick Henry’s Mia Amador second (11:22.07), and Ottawa Hills’ JoAnna Kelley third (11:22.40).

    There were also qualifers from the area in relay races on the girls side.

    In the 3,200, Danbury’s quartet finished second and Patrick Henry fourth, while Montpelier took third in both the 400 relay and 800 relay.

    On the boys side, Ottawa Hills was led by its distance runner Riley Nixon, who won the 1,600 in 4:14.97 and the 3,200 in 9:26.15. Fayette’s Jose Blanco finished third (4:25.33) in the 1,600.

    In the 3,200 relay, Ottawa Hills’ team was runner-up and Fayette finished third. Other qualifying relay times came from Van Buren’s quartet that took third in the 800, Maumee Valley Country Day who took third in the 400, and Van Buren’s fourth place finish in the 1,600.

    A Montpelier duo finished first and second in the discus, with Logan Pontious winning with a throw of 148 feet, 6 inches, and Eli Fackler coming in second (148-4). Pontious added a third (51-5) in the shot put and Liberty Center’s Hunter Spangler was fourth (51-1¾).

    Also in the field events, McComb’s Braxton Althauser won the long jump with a leap of 21-8½. Lakota’s Braxton Quaintance finished runner-up (15-0) and Old Fort’s Evan Combs fourth (14-4) in the pole vault.

    Pettisville’s Sam Haley took first in the 100 (11.10) and the 400 (49.27). Van Buren’s Mike Pendergast finished third in the 400 (49.86) and Northwood’s R’emontay Coleman took fourth in the 100 (11.16).

    Fayette’s Ethan Lee placed second (1:57.94) in the 800 to advance.
