FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – Rain has continued to add up here in April 2024 across northeast Indiana and northwest Ohio. In fact, Fort Wayne is edging closer to the rainiest April on record.
Here’s an updated look at our April 2024 precipitation calendar. As of 5 PM Sunday, we have picked up 6.93 inches of precipitation. This is over three inches above average and we’ve even seen two days this month with over an inch of rain!
Our current rainfall total places us as currently the 4th wettest April on record in Fort Wayne. Our record wettest April was in 1944, when 7.19 inches of rain fell. This means we only need 0.26 inches of rain to break the record over the course of the last two days of the month.
Measurable precipitation has been recorded on 16 April days so far (which does not include only a trace of rain). This is a bit above our average, but behind our record of 20 days with precipitation in April, which was set back in 1983. This shows how much rain has fallen on certain days this month.
We also remain well above average in the precipitation department for the meteorological spring season and for the year so far. We have surpassed 11 inches of spring precipitation (from March 1st to April 28th). This is over four inches above our average. We also have climbed over the 15 inch mark for our annual precipitation. This is also over five inches above our yearly average in Fort Wayne!
The surplus of precipitation lately has resulted in the complete removal of drought across Indiana. For the first time in nearly a year, the state is not even seeing abnormally dry conditions. This is good news for spring planting, but we do not want the fields and gardens to be too waterlogged as we approach the beginning of May.
We’ll continue to track the latest rainfall numbers and will update this story as needed. To track any remaining rain/storm chances through the rest of April, visit our WANE 15 Weather Page . Stay dry!
