COLLEGE UPDATE: Brooke Wintlend hammers 3 homers in twinbill

Former Hononegah High School slugger Brooke Wintlend hammered three home runs as Purdue Fort Wayne swept a double-header against Detroit Mercy, 3-2 and 13-5.

In the first game, Wintlend provided all the offense with a three-run homer in the sixth inning. The blast put the Mastodons up 3-1.

The nightcap was a slugfest with seven homers between the two teams. PFW (11-29, 6-11 Horizon League) belted five. Wintlend hit her second of the day in a six-run second inning. She added a three-run shot to left center in the sixth.

Wintlend finished the twinbill 3-for-7 with three runs scored and seven RBIs. For the season, the 5-foot-10 first baseman is hitting .264 with five homers and 13 RBIs.

EAGLES SOARING: Rock Valley College’s baseball team has won six of seven games and has a 27-12 record with freshman shortstop Konner Giddley (Beloit Turner) serving as an igniter.

Batting at the top of the lineup for the Golden Eagles, Giddley is hitting .390 with a .458 on-base percentage. He has nine doubles, two triples, a homer, 32 runs scored and 19 RBIs. He also has nine stolen bases.

In an 11-1 win over Triton on Sunday, Giddley was 2-for-3 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI.

NICE, BRYCE: Bryce Goodwine (Hononegah) has played in 29 games with 26 starts for the University of Indianapolis baseball team (27-14, 23-5). The Greyhounds swept four games against Maryville (Mo.) with Goodwine going 5-for-12.

Goodwine has hit .370 and scored 27 runs. He has hit three doubles, a triple, a homer, has driven in 19 and has nine stolen bases.

BACH ROCKS: Freshman Lexi Bach (Hononegah) pitched Emory University to a 2-1 victory over New York University in the nightcap of a double-header, giving the Eagles their first conference sweep since 2019.

Bach improved to 7-4 with her best performance to date. She went the full seven innings, allowing four hits and one earned run. She didn’t walk anyone and matched her career high with six strikeouts.

For the season, Bach has a 4.42 earned run average, striking out 41 in 69 2-3 innings.

SMOOTH SAYLES: Sophomore catcher Dylan Sayles (Hononegah) is having an outstanding offensive season at Indian Hills Community College, hitting .348 with a .500 on-base percentage.

Sayles has helped his NJCAA team go 30-12, playing in 39 games and scoring 45 runs with another 22 RBIs. He has five doubles, a triple and a homer. He has walked 25 times compared to 22 strikeouts and has only been caught once in his 17 stolen base attempts.
