Christian Bailey was among 88 students from 23 countries who debated contentious topics facing the world, including the federal case against former President Donald Trump, tensions between China and Taiwan, the climate crisis and college diversity programs.

Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio raved about Bailey's performance, saying he was "one of the best speakers I've ever seen," and ranked him first on his ballot.

"It is truly inspiring to witness the diligence and dedication of these students, who have showcased exceptional speech and debate skills while maintaining a high degree of civility and respect for differing opinions," Marcus Chambers, superintendent of Okaloosa County Schools, said in a release. "I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Christian and commend him for this outstanding achievement."

The panel of judges also included Stephen Adoli, director of admissions at the University of Austin; Peter Boghossian, founder of the National Progress Alliance; Simon Hankinson, senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation; and Clea Conner, CEO of Open to Debate.

Bailey received a $500 reward for his performance, with his coach, Katrina Brownsburger, debate teacher at Fort Walton Beach High School, receiving a matching amount.

"Our best tournament yet," said James Fishback, president and founder of Incubate Debate. "These students, these rounds, were everything debate should be: civil, unbiased and intellectually challenging. I could not be prouder of these exceptional students."
