OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Several Omaha-metro counties and communities are under open burning bans due to the dry, warm and windy weather we’ve seen lately. Douglas County has a burn ban in place county-wide until further notice. Ponca Hills Fire Chief Joel Sacks says the issuance of a Red Flag Warning prompted the ban, in addition to the warm air, gusty winds, and low relative humidity expected over the next 24 hours.

The most common crime was theft, accounting for more than half of the cases with 148 incidents, followed by assault with 87 cases. Other crimes reported were trespassing with 22 cases, and both burglary and other crimes were at 10 cases each. Disturbance, shooting, and vandalism were the least reported crimes with 3, 2, and 1 cases respectively. This data provides a snapshot of the crime situation in the place, highlighting the need for increased vigilance against theft and assault, which together accounted for over 83% of the reported crimes. The low numbers of disturbance, shooting, and vandalism cases, while positive, should not lead to complacency in maintaining law and order.

James Romero, 31, is charged with seven counts of theft by deception $501-$1,499. The charges are class I misdemeanors, and Romero has pled not guilty to each count.
