This Ohio Town’s Three-Block-Long Park Has Been The Heart Of The Community Since 1790
Not many places can claim their public park has been serving the same function for over 230 years without interruption. Piketon Council discusses possible zoning law changes
PIKETON — With the recent announcement of the reindustrialization of the A-Plant property and the expected 35,000 workers that will be working on the project, Piketon Village Council discussed possible changes to its zoning laws at its Monday, April 20 meeting. “I want to make sure we can handle it (the potential growth) and do smart growth,” Councilwoman Jennifer Chandler said. Chandler presented the draft of an ordinance that included a zoning overlay that would affect all non-permanent residential housing developments in the village. “Last time there was a big influx of construction workers there was a need for temporary housing, and we have paid for that ever since,” Chandler said. “When the construction is over and everybody leaves, the temporary housing is removed and the infrastructure is left in place.” Chandler explained that if nothing is developed on that site soon after the housing was removed, the site becomes very difficult to redevelop because the infrastructure is in such a condition that it would be a costly project to repair or replace it. “In order to prevent that from happening this time round, something we could do is apply this zoning overlay over housing. It just addresses non-permanent homes,”
