Linwood Cemetery is Columbus' oldest institution - and the Ramble celebrates its story
The oldest institution in Columbus isn’t a building or a structure. It’s Linwood Cemetery, established in 1828 — the same year as the birth of the city — after the son of the surveyor died during the work. Nearly 200 years later, the Historic Linwood Foundation continues to preserve this site. Its annual Linwood Ramble, an evening of food, music and guided walks through the grounds, will be Oct. 15, starting at 4 p.m., and this year’s theme is “ Secretive Symbols in Plain Sight.” Ahead of this year’s Ramble, the Ledger-Enquirer spoke with Elliott Waddell, president of the Board of Trustees for Historic Linwood Inc. We asked him about this year’s event and the history and importance of the cemetery, which he said includes “Academy Award winners, soldiers, [and] philanthropists” and many names integral to Columbus’ culture and community. Truman died that March, and Thomas buried him on a bluff above the future town, citing the foundation’s history. That ground became the City Cemetery, and it took the name Linwood from a nearby

Mail it early, or don't mail it: what Columbus voters need to know about ballot postmarks
A U.S. Postal Service rule has set off warnings nationwide that mailed ballots could get late postmarks and go uncounted. The rule, which took effect in December 2025 , says a postmark usually shows when a piece of mail is first machine-processed, which isn’t always the day it was mailed. USPS says the rule describes existing practice rather than changing it. For voters, it matters in states that count late-arriving ballots postmarked on time, and in Georgia, for military and overseas voters. Anyone can ask for a hand-stamped ballot, but for most Georgia voters, a hand stamp does nothing. The ballot must be in the elections office by 7 p.m. on Election Day (Nov. 3 this year), and a same-day postmark doesn’t really make the mail move any faster. But it does matter for military and overseas voters, whose ballots count if they are postmarked by Election Day. For a stateside soldier at Fort Benning mailing on Election Day, a hand stamp can be the difference between counted and rejected. Georgia sets a receipt deadline, not a mailing deadline Elena Patel, from the nonpartisan think tank Brookings , posits that the USPS has said a postmark may reflect when a
