The small town of Arcadia, SC, exemplifies a remarkable transformation that's sweeping across the United States—the repurposing of historic textile mills into modern mixed-use spaces. At the heart of this change is the Arcadia Mill, once the pulsing vein of the town's economy, founded by Dr. Henry Arthur Ligon in 1923. Despite the trials of the past, including the agricultural and Great Depression, the mill persevered, changing hands and adapting to survive. Its final evolution, however, came at the hands of developer Pace Burt, who in 2007 converted the mill into the Mayfair Mill Lofts, a luxurious residential complex that respects the site's historical integrity.
