Opinion: Merced College needs independent board oversight, not rubber stamps
The late comedian George Carlin famously observed, “It’s a great big club, and you ain’t in it.” That line increasingly applies to the Merced College Board of Trustees. As a longtime faculty member who has served in campus leadership, I’ve seen a troubling shift. Instead of...

Ex-Clovis High standout is leading by example for Fresno City College women's soccer
Fresno City College sophomore Evie Juarez has provided a lift to the Rams since last season. She was counted on to score goals. She did that. She was counted on to support her teammates. She did that. And through it all, she kept learning, no matter how hard the coaches could be. The former Clovis High standout knew it was for the best. This season, she has scored 11 goals and has eight assists in helping the Rams to a 12-1-1 overall record and 8-0-1 in the Central Valley Conference. The Bee caught up with Juarez to get her thoughts on her time at Fresno City and the season’s progress. Question: You’ve been playing soccer at Fresno City College for two years. What are some of the things you learned? Evie Juarez : I didn’t expect to grow so quickly. (Rams coach) Oliver (Germond) and the coaching staff challenged me constantly. Representing my Valley and being close to home. I was so grateful that I went to a two-year junior college. I felt guided, and the growth was constant. Something I needed in my life. I’m more conscious of my nutritional consumption and time management. Q: How much have you

Jefferson Elementary student earns Character Counts Week Respect award
Joseph Guerra is a shining example of what it means to show respect and treat others the way they want to be treated. He is this year's Character Counts Respect award winner. Judy Estala was Joseph's fourth-grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary School in Dinuba last year and nominated him for the award. Now a fifth-grader, Joseph continues to make a positive impact on his school through his respectful and accepting behavior. "What makes Joseph truly special is the authenticity of his respect for others. He doesn't treat people well because he's being watched or because he expects something in return," Estala said. "He is genuinely kind because he values every person he encounters." Joseph's respect and acceptance of others are reflected in everything he does, helping create a positive classroom environment. He works well with his classmates and has a unique ability to build friendships with students from different backgrounds and personalities, Estala said. He also includes everyone and helps create connections among students who might otherwise struggle to connect. "Whether working on group projects, playing at recess or simply sitting together at lunch, he made everyone feel valued and included," Estala said. "At the end of the year, he

The Mustangs last won a league title in 2019. This EYL showdown pits two of the league's top-scoring teams against each other. Tulare Western is averaging nearly 50 points per game. Hanford is averaging 37. Both teams, behind their explosive no-huddle tempo offense, have the firepower to potentially combine for over 100 points. Will that happen? "I hope so offensively," Hanford head coach Cannon Sanchez said. "But I hope we can keep them out of the end zone and slow them down a little bit." Hanford's tempo offense under Sanchez is one of the fastest in the nation in terms of running the next play after the whistle has blown and the ball is

Honesty, accountability earn Tulare student Character Counts Week Award
Jonathan Eversull is this year’s Character Counts winner for Trustworthiness. This Tulare student exemplifies what the Character Counts pillar of Trustworthiness means. Jonathan made the decision to be honest and act with integrity in the classroom, according to his nominator. Francine Heller teaches fifth grade at Frank Kohn Elementary School in Tulare. She nominated Jonathan after seeing how he responded to making a poor choice in class. He did not make excuses or blame anyone else. He took responsibility for his behavior and accepted the consequences of his actions, according to Heller. “Trustworthy to me means making good decisions and being honest,” Jonathan said. “I feel very proud of myself for being seen as a trustworthy person.” According to his teacher, Jonathan went home and told his parents about what happened at school and was honest. His maturity and acceptance of consequences around the situation added to his level of trustworthiness. After learning from his mistake, Jonathan continues to model self-control and good behavior, Heller said. Long losing streak finally snapped for Fresno High. ‘About sticking together'
Time to celebrate at Fresno High. After 29 consecutive losses, the Warriors finally had something to celebrate, defeating Clovis South 12-6 on Friday. The victory was significant for Fresno, which had endured a difficult stretch without a win since the last two games of the 2024 season. First-year Warriors coach Steve Daniel told his team to keep playing together and good things will come. “It’s just about sticking together and fighting,” Daniel said. “I told them if you stick together, that’s the key to winning as a team.” That message carried the Warriors through a hard-fought contest, with running back Angel Lopez scoring both of Fresno’s touchdowns on rushing attempts to account for all 12 points. The win also came on a memorable night for Clovis South, which hosted its first varsity football game at its new stadium. Despite the occasion, Fresno kept its focus on the task at hand, earning a victory that could provide a much-needed boost of confidence for the remainder of the season and beyond. “We’ve been preaching, win the moments, and that’s what we’re going to continue to do,” Daniel said. “We just try to win every play, flush the last play, win the next

Fresno Bee Top 25: Dinuba stuns Kerman with late TD; Kingsburg holds off Immanuel
Dinuba High football coach CJ Lester grinned ear to ear after his Emperors upset The Bee’s No. 13 Kerman. He was confident and believed they would pull off the win, even before kickoff started in Kerman. “We kind of knew that we’re good,” he said. “This is a confident football team.” Tony Ibarra made sure his coach left happy when he connected on a 40-yard pass to Josh Sanchez for a touchdown with 23 seconds remaining, securing a 17-10 win in a defensive battle on Friday night. “We’re gonna come over here and we’re gonna compete,” Lester said. “We’re gonna allow ourselves to win the game.” His defensive mindset was spot on, even with Josh Lopez looking over from the opposite side of the field, who has made the Lions one of the top defensive teams in the Central Section. Dinuba can also brag about allowing only 10 points in the game and scoring the game’s first points via a safety in the second quarter. Kerman led 7-2 after a 17-yard touchdown run by Justin Molina in the third quarter. The Emperors regained the lead and converted a two-point conversion for a 10-7 lead in the fourth quarter. From Face to Page: From a Stranger to a Familiar Face
Sketching faces in the crowd reveals the untold stories of our school. Every day we walk past hundreds of people. They are just background noise–a blur of faces, coats, and umbrellas. To us, they are “strangers”, and to them, we are the same. We look at our phones to avoid eye contact, creating invisible walls between ourselves and the world. However, when an artist opens a sketchbook, that invisibility fades. Behind that anonymous face in the crowd, there can be a hidden story, and with just a light sketch of them, it comes to light!
