Council approves Tower District safety plan, special vendor lot-residents express concern
The Fresno city council approved a new resolution Thursday to establish a special geographic zone for street vendors in the Tower District — though residents and patrons of the city’s entertainment district aren’t fully sold on the idea. The city council voted unanimously at a special meeting to launch a pilot program that will move all street food vendors off the sidewalks and into a designated area for them to operate. For the next 90 days, vendors in the Tower District will be restricted to a vacant lot near Olive and Van Ness avenues from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Thursday through Sunday. The area will be equipped with lighting, a security camera and security officers. Councilmember Nelson Esparza has been skeptical that street vendors are the root cause of safety issues in the Tower District. “Given the predicament we find ourselves in the Tower District, on the Olive strip, I was willing to entertain this temporary change,” Esparza said. A day before the council’s vote, a community meeting was held at the Tower Theater, during which city leaders heard residents’ concerns regarding Tower District safety and other issues. The meeting was originally organized by club MIA, though the city

Antique Moving Lessons From Fresno’s Kearney Mansion
Theo. Kearney, the Fresno landowner who came to be known as the Raisin King of California, never got his château. He lived in the superintendent’s lodge of his Fruit Vale Estate while planning a far grander house nearby, which the site’s 1970 National Register nomination says was to be modeled on Chenonceau in France and called Chateau Fresno. When he died in 1906, only the lodge and the servants’ quarters of that planned complex had been completed. He left the estate to the University of California, and the nomination says the University, “not appreciating possible historical significance,” removed many of the furnishings. By 1962, when the Fresno City and County Historical Society took on the house as a museum, many original pieces were gone. Thanks to the generosity of many, the Society’s history says, a significant number were located during the 1960s.

US labor secretary visits Merced College to learn about AgTEC Innovation
U.S. Secretary of Labor Keith Sonderling visited Merced College on Monday to see how the college is preparing workers for the future of agriculture through innovative training programs, advanced technology and industry partnerships. Sonderling toured the construction site of the AgTEC Innovation Center, a new facility designed to provide hands-on training in food processing, agricultural technology and related fields. The visit also highlighted the U.S. Department of Labor’s nearly $2 million investment in Merced College’s AgTEC Workforce Initiative. “American agriculture is quickly evolving with innovation and new technology increasing our production and providing more food and fuel to feed American families and power our economy,” Sonderling wrote in an Instagram post following the visit. “Thanks to partners like Merced College, the U.S. Department of Labor is leading the way to fund programs that ensure Americans are skilled in utilizing this new machinery to continue agricultural dominance.” Merced College President Chris Vitelli said the visit provided an opportunity to demonstrate how the college is translating federal investment into educational opportunities for students and the regional workforce. “We are grateful to Secretary Sonderling and the U.S. Department of Labor for their investment in the future of agricultural workforce development,” Vitelli said. “Agriculture

Sanger looks to triple hotel tax rate to 12%
SANGER – The city of Sanger is asking voters to approve a tax increase that more visitors would pay for than residents. Measure B on the November ballot proposes the city increase the existing transient occupancy tax from 4% to 12%. A transient occupancy tax, also known as a hotel tax, is a type of sales tax charged on hotel and motel stays of 30 days or less. This means it generally does not apply to Sanger residents — unless they are staying in short-term lodging within city limits.
