Austin Darga spreads positivity through his life’s journey being blind
TRAVERSE CITY - The Incompass Leadership Conference is taking place June 5th-7th. 29 year old Austin Darga from Traverse City gave a speech today at the conference about overcoming the hurdles of his disability. Darga has been completely blind since birth but you may recognize his golden radio voice in local broadcasts and his own podcast show The Way I See It. Darga has also become a spokesperson for Grand Traverse Industries spreading positivity to all who hear his story. “Just like you, I’m someone who likes to live a fulfilled, independent life,” says GTI Spokesman and Podcast Host Austin Darga. “Moving forward,I would like to continue growing my public speaking skills and helping others through hard times. After working with BSBP I got to work at Grand Traverse Industries and they’ve been such an amazing support and helped me to reach my goals in where I am today. World War II veteran’s legacy lives on in Grayling
GRAYLING - Eighty years ago Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy, changing world history. Now an American Legion Post in Northern Michigan is remembering a World War II veteran who passed away last year. American Legion Post 106 in Grayling said Army veteran Junior Palmer was one of the longest-standing members of any American Legion Post in the nation with 74 years of membership. Son-in-law Terry Green said that veteran Junior Palmer was a well-loved member of Post 106.
Grand Traverse County Road Commission begins road brining project
TRAVERSE CITY — A project being carried out this week by the Grand Traverse County Road Commission. They’ll be brining the roads until the end of the week and expect to cover the entire county. New technology like their online reporting system makes the job easier and with the salt and water solution. This ensures that the gravel on the road can bind and become more solid. It reduces dust kick-up and creates more solid roads within the county for drivers. “We work with the township supervisors and we know what roads that are here in each township,” says Grand Traverse County Road Commission Superintendent Larry LaCross, “and we walk through gravel roads with the township supervisor so that they understand and know what we’re doing because they have a cost share as well in this process. People live on this road, they want this road to be nice. Usually this process is done before Memorial Day but due to material shortages it was pushed back.

There are so many fun, exciting beers on the tap list at Traverse City’s Brewery Terra Firma that it’s easy to overlook the Manitou Amber. But here’s a reason to give this old standby some love this month: According to Terra Firma President John Niedermaier, June 2024 marks 30 years since the first batch of the Manitou Amber was brewed. The beer was the work of Jack Archiable, founder of Traverse Brewing Company, northern Michigan’s first craft brewery since the Prohibition days. The Manitou Amber was its first beer. Niedermaier, who cut his teeth working for Archiable back in the day, eventually bought all the Traverse Brewing patents, which means the Manitou Amber lives on. Commissioners Approve Commission on Aging Move, Reject Twin Lakes Settlement Offer
Area seniors should have an easier time accessing services after Grand Traverse County commissioners Wednesday unanimously approved a lease agreement that will see the Commission on Aging leave Front Street this summer and move into the Area Agency on Aging facility on Park Drive – putting two major senior organizations together on one site. County commissioners Wednesday also rejected a settlement offer in a lawsuit over the ownership of Twin Lakes Park after discussing the offer in closed session.
