Pa. food stamp recipients would be rewarded for making healthier choices under House-passed bill
The state House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a bill this week that would make purchasing fruit and vegetables easier for low-income Pennsylvanians. The bill would establish the Food Bucks Program, crediting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program recipients at least 40 cents for every dollar’s worth of SNAP benefits, known as food stamps, spent on fruits and vegetables and other healthy items that don’t have added sugars, fats, oils or salt. The program would be administered by a nonprofit of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s choosing.
Proposed Review of Pennsylvania’s Permitting Process
The Pennsylvania House of Representatives is considering a resolution, House Resolution 468, introduced by Rep. Jim Struzzi, to review the Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) permitting process. The resolution aims to identify best practices, evaluate the burdens of the current system, and recommend improvements. The Legislative Budget and Finance Committee (LBFC) would be tasked with creating a comprehensive list of all DEP permits, assessing their legal justifications, issuance frequencies, and approval durations. Additionally, the LBFC would investigate any outdated, overlapping, or legally unjustified permits and compare Pennsylvania’s system with those of other states.
2024 Pennsylvania State Laurel Queen Crowned in Wellsboro
WELLSBORO, PA (WENY) -- The 2024 Pennsylvania State Laurel Queen was crowned Saturday evening, in a coronation ceremony at Wellsboro High School. Liliana Kilgore of Manheim Township High School was crowned queen, out of a field of 29 candidates representing high schools from across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. This was the first year Manheim Township High School selected a student to participate in the annual Laurel Festival Queen's pageant. Each girl participating in the pageant is selected by their school to attend, either by fellow students, staff or administrators.
