Best beards on Broad Street: Schnauzerfest
Tails were wagging on Broad Street Saturday night at Rome’s seventh annual Schnauzerfest, where hundreds of schnauzers and their families celebrated Halloween with a costume parade. This year’s event was another success, with the event spanning two days and drawing 731 schnauzers to Rome, according to organizer Hugh Tyner. Along with the surge in schnauzers, the gathering also had pet owners from throughout the country in attendance, including a family that came to Rome all the way from Washington, which is a record for the event. “It’s always such a great weekend, and the weather was perfect,” Mayor Jim Bojo said. “My sister walked Broad Street early in the afternoon with her husband and had a great time; the dogs were so friendly.” The event started Friday afternoon at Burk Farm in Armuchee with a meet-and-greet, then continued Saturday morning at Bridgepoint Plaza, where families and their pets gathered in full costume before the parade, which took place at night for the first time. The Forum River Center was open Saturday and hosted skills competitions such as Barn Hunt, Fast Cat Racing and a Schnauzer Idol talent competition for singing pups, and hundreds of schnauzers competed to be top dog.

Director Katy Walters. Since late September, several businesses have sponsored animal adoption fees, which led to unique names being assigned to the pets, Walters said. Interested businesses can either give P.A.W.S. a call at 706-236-4537 or swing by the shelter at 99 N. Ave. NE.
