Candidates propose vocational school to address overcrowding

Republican nominees Yahu Blackwell and Glen Geelhaar are proposing to expand vocational education in Maryland’s 8th Legislative District and convert the former Golden Ring Middle School into a technology and trades-focused high school to address overcrowding and prepare students for the workforce. Overlea High School, originally designed for about 1,100 students, now serves approximately 1,600, according to figures cited by the candidates. The overcrowding has resulted in some classes being held in temporary outdoor trailers. Blackwell, the Republican Senate nominee, and Geelhaar, the Republican House of Delegates nominee, say repurposing Golden Ring could provide additional classroom space while offering students alternatives to a traditional four-year college education. Their proposal includes instruction in automotive mechanics, plumbing, welding, electrical work, barbering, cosmetology, heating and air conditioning, pipe fitting and bricklaying. They also want to restore driver’s education and home economics and expand financial literacy instruction covering credit management, homeownership, business development and civics. The candidates say students could graduate with trade credentials and pursue apprenticeships, potentially earning $70,000 to $80,000 annually. Actual earnings would depend on the occupation, qualifications, experience and employment opportunities. The candidates have not released a detailed implementation plan or a comprehensive cost estimate for the proposed curriculum. Boundary
