ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — These are the top local stories we're following for you today. Twin brothers were sentenced Wednesday in a fatal hit-and-run that happened earlier this year in Asheville. Buncombe County District Attorney Todd Williams said Calvin Tyler Dion, 22, was sentenced to at least nine years in prison after he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and felony hit-and-run inflicting serious injury or death in the March 2023 killing of cyclist James Haywood Shearon. Calvin's twin brother, Allen Blayze Dion, was convicted of accessory after the fact and other charges and sentenced to an active sentence of 10-21 months in prison.
Asheville and Buncombe County's Code Purple Provides Emergency Shelter During Extreme Cold
Code Purple, a joint initiative by Asheville and Buncombe County shelters, provides emergency overflow shelter for homeless individuals during extreme cold weather. It is activated when temperatures drop to or below 32 degrees, including wind chill, or between 33-40 degrees with precipitation. Participating shelters offer extra beds with fewer restrictions during this time.

Man accused of secret peeping at Starbucks faces additional charges
ASHEVILLE, N.C,. (FOX Carolina) - Asheville police announced new charges on Friday for a man previously accused in a September incident involving hidden cameras at Starbucks. According to a release, William Mcalpin Aycock IV is now charged with two counts of second degree sexual exploitation of a minor after investigators discovered evidence following his initial arrest.

Code Purple is a coordinated effort among Asheville and Buncombe County shelters and other organizations to provide emergency overflow shelter to people experiencing homelessness during extremely cold weather (at or below 32 degrees, including wind chill, or 33-40 degrees with precipitation). During Code Purple, participating shelters will provide more beds with fewer requirements than their typical programming. Code Purple sites will also work with participants to refer them to ongoing shelter and housing options.
