State issues violations to Mountaire in Millsboro for odors

Following a request to increase meat production, odors at Mountaire Farms ' poultry processing plant in Millsboro led to violations of the company's air quality permit, according to the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control. No fines were issued with the September notice of violation, but Mountaire was ordered to create a new odor management plan. The poultry industry of which Mountaire is a part is ubiquitous in Delaware. In 2025, Delaware chicken growers raised 263 million chickens, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture , and in 2024, the poultry industry employed over 8,800 people in Delaware, according to the National Chicken Council. All those chickens, however, create a lot of wastewater, and in 2017, the wastewater treatment plant at Mountaire in Millsboro failed. At that time, poorly treated or untreated wastewater was sprayed onto surrounding fields, leading to hefty fines from the state and lawsuit settlements in the tens of millions. Improvements to the wastewater system, required by an agreement between the state and Mountaire, were made and time passed. In October 2025, Mountaire Millsboro requested an amendment to its air quality permit to increase meat production from 4,200 to 5,000 tons per week (or 310,128

Redden State Forest balances conservation and growth in Sussex County

Foresters at Redden State Forest are working to preserve a piece of the region’s agricultural and forestry heritage in hopes to ensure its woodlands remain healthy for generations. Redden is Delaware’s largest state forest and has been managed for sustainable forestry for decades. The forest provides wildlife habitat, recreation opportunities and renewable timber resources, with active management designed to conserve, protect and enhance the landscape. For Erich Burkentine, southern regional forester with Delaware Department of Agriculture, maintaining that healthy forest sometimes means cutting trees. While harvesting may seem counterintuitive to conservation, he said selective tree removal can help improve forest diversity, encourage new growth and create better conditions for wildlife. As trees grow and their canopies close, less sunlight reaches the forest floor, limiting the growth of smaller plants, shrubs and other tree species. “You’re trying to balance production with diversity plus added benefits of really good wildlife habitat,” Burkentine said. Without intervention, some areas can become dominated by a limited number of species, reducing the variety of vegetation. Selective harvesting allows foresters to remove competing trees, give stronger specimens more room to grow and create opportunities for new vegetation. “I want to select the best examples of the species
