Warriors have plenty of options
EASTON — He’s had teams with size, some with speed. He’s had teams with experience, others with depth at certain positions. And he’s welcomed transfers before. But Easton High head football coach Matt Griffith may have never had this collection of qualities intersect all at once like the group under his direction this preseason. “We finally got some speed,” Griffith said. “We’ve got size again. Now, we’re trying to put it all together. It’s going to be an interesting year for us if we can figure it out.” Figuring into that speed-and-size equation is the arrival of two of the Bayside Conference’s most dynamic players, senior Ja’Zir Dickerson, the Bayside’s 2025 Player of the Year who transferred from Colonel Richardson, and all-conference first-team slot receiver JaDereon Thompson, who's wowed the competition the last three years while at Queen Anne’s County. “Obviously, DeReon and Ja’ coming in add a significant amount of speed and athleticism for us to utilize on our offense, and really have fit in well with the other guys,” Griffith said. The bulk of the others guys impressed in their own way last season, helping Easton go 8-3 that included a spot in the second round of the

In 2022, in his second year as head football coach at Dover, Chip Knapp guided the Senators to the DIAA Class 3A championship game. Knapp has a chance to repeat the feat at a different school this fall, in his second season at Cape Henlopen. “I’m definitely more comfortable with the team, with the program, with the high school and the community,” Knapp said. “The team has learned our ways, and we’re constantly looking to improve.” Knapp joined the Wesley College coaching staff in 1989 and served as offensive coordinator under longtime head coach Mike Drass for a run of 13 straight NCAA Division III playoff appearances (2005-17). He became head coach after Drass’ sudden death in 2018 and led Wesley to a 19-7 record in two-plus seasons. The Wolverines’ football program was disbanded when Wesley was acquired by Delaware State University in 2021. Knapp made a successful transition to high school coaching at nearby Dover, guiding the Senators to a 24-12 record in three years. WHO'S NO. 1?
