FAIRMONT, N.C. (WBTW) — A Fairmont police officer shot and killed a person Monday night after he was stabbed multiple times in a knife attack, Chief Jon Edwards said.

It happened around 8:30 p.m., but authorities didn’t say where.

Officials said the officer, who has yet to be named, fired his service weapon and struck the suspect, who later died.

The officer was taken to a local hospital.

Officials said the suspect’s identity is being withheld pending notification of family, while the officer’s name isn’t being released pending a state Bureau of Investigation probe.

Fairmont is a town of about 2,600 in Robeson County.
