High Country Community Health reopens dental clinic in Newland
NEWLAND — High Country Community Health reopened its dental clinic for services at 500 Pineola St., in Newland earlier this month. While the new building has been back in operation since March 2, the clinical team celebrated the clinic’s reopening with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, March 26. The building underwent renovations due to flood damage from Hurricane Helene in September 2024. Today, the building has nine operating rooms compared to the original six. As of March 26, it has been 545 days since Helene struck North Carolina, according to High Country Community Health’s founder and CEO, Alice Salthouse. Helene became the most deadly hurricane in modern U.S. history since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. There is approximately one dentist for every 2,201 residents in Avery County, Salthouse said. “We’re moving into a better place and I’m grateful for that,” she added. The clinical team received expansion plans and grant funding through various organizations to sustain their services for the last year and a half. “I’m happy to say that Blue Cross Blue Shield, that foundation, we got an expansion grant for 108 in Boone, and after Helene they allowed us to move funds to help this project,” Halcyon Innis,

Rural Medical Services offers pilot program for pregnant moms
NEWPORT — Rural Medical Services (RMS) has been selected for a pilot program that will help expectant mothers stay healthy and get access to the services and programs they need while working toward a healthy pregnancy and a healthy delivery. Dr. Larry Mathers explained that all six doctors at RMS deliver babies at Tennova Newport Medical Center. During his tenure with RMS, he has delivered about 1,500 babies at the local hospital. “We have seen mothers come in to see us who appear to be six or seven months pregnant. When we ask them why they didn’t start prenatal care earlier, they often say it is because they didn’t have insurance or couldn’t afford the visits,” he said. “Through the TennSteps program, the mother works with an advocate who helps them find the resources they need. Everyone who needs insurance gets signed up for some kind of insurance. That way, they can get prenatal care and care after delivery,” Mathers added. He explained all the physicians at RMS are family physicians, but they have all undergone training in obstetrics. “In family-centered obstetric care we see birth as a normal, healthy physiologic process. We don’t see it as a medical problem
