FIRST ALERT WEATHER: Rain Continues Tonight, Thunderstorms Possible Thursday Afternoon

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) - Good evening everyone and happy Wednesday. After a chilly start to the day, clouds have continued to thicken across northern Maine as our next system moves into the region. Periods of light rain will continue to develop tonight, becoming more widespread through Thursday as a cold front approaches from the west. Rainfall amounts have trended a little higher compared to earlier forecasts, but this still does not look like enough rain to provide much meaningful improvement to the ongoing drought. One additional wrinkle in Thursday’s forecast will be the potential for a few thunderstorms across northern Maine during the afternoon.

Quieter Wednesday Ahead, Then Showers Return Thursday

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - Our Wednesday will be a much quieter day as high pressure builds in... allowing the pressure gradient to relax... in turn... resulting in a much lighter wind. A warm front approaching the state will bring us more clouds and a slight chance for a few isolated showers... mainly across the north. Expect a partly to mostly cloudy sky and more seasonable temperatures with highs in the mid-50s to low 60s. Scattered showers will be possible tonight as the warm front moves through. It won’t be as cold tonight thanks to clouds and some slightly warmer air in place. Temperatures tonight will drop to the mid-40s to low 50s for overnight lows.

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - A cold front will continue to push to our east this afternoon followed by upper-level energy in its wake. This will keep the threat of scattered showers going through the afternoon hours with the best chances being over northern locales. Otherwise expect partly to mostly cloudy skies for the remainder of the day with temperatures in the mid-50s to low 60s. Winds will pick up out of the west this afternoon with gusts to 30-35 MPH possible too. The wind will continue to increase tonight out of the west/northwest as low pressure to our northeast continues to strengthen... causing the pressure gradient over Maine to tighten some more. We’ll see sustained winds between 15-25 MPH with gusts to 35-45 MPH possible... strongest across the north. Otherwise plan on a dry night under clear to partly cloudy skies. It’ll be colder tonight with lows in the upper 30s to low 40s.
