Friedrich Memorial Fishing Tournament raises $5K for American Cancer Society
The 2024 Denny Friedrich Memorial Tournament and American Cancer Society fundraiser was held on June 1 on Big Chetac and Birch Lakes out of Doolittle Park in Birchwood. Forty-five anglers from the Rice Lake, Cameron, Barron, Chetek and Eau Claire areas fished the bass tournament. Wade Rickey weighed in the heaviest five-fish limit at 14.36 pounds to win. Two Hayward residents face more than 40 charges connected to series of burglaries
Two people from Hayward are facing a total of 44 charges of theft, burglary and damage to property in Bayfield County. Authorities say Logan M. Melton, 22, and Melissa Thorp, 37, who live together, stole two cars, a boat, firearms, an ATV, bikes and other items as part of a string of burglaries between March and July 2023. Phillips girls top Ladysmith
CATAWBA — The 57th annual Lumberman’s Day celebration featured co-ed volleyball, horseshoes and corn hole tournaments and a special softball game between the Phillips Middle School girls’ softball team and the Lady Lumberjills from Ladysmith on June 7 at Catawba Park field. The Phillips girls won the day with a 13-3 victory. Mel Tingo lead the way in the effort with an inside the park home run. Coaches Blake Edwards and Josh Prohaska arranged the softball game with Ladysmith. Six co-ed volleyball teams played a round robin followed by a double elimination tournament that lasted until 9 p.m. Jessie Denny captained the first place volleyball team.

Cadet Gavin Abric of Hayward graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in Highland Falls, New York. The Class of 2024 commencement ceremony was held on Saturday, May 25. The class consisted of 1,036 graduating cadets, who completed an intense 47-month curriculum.
