Rita Ruth Elrod, age 71, a resident of Howard Drive in Salyersville, Kentucky; passed away peacefully at Pikeville Medical Center on Monday, December 4, 2023. Rita was born April 5, 1952 in Ypsilanti, Michigan the daughter of the late Marion Robert Elrod and Naomi Howard Elrod. Son, Robbie Reed, sisters, Tammy Cooper, Arlene Stephens, Jolene McFarlan preceded in death.

This week in Martin County, Kentucky, several incidents occurred resulting in arrests and tragic outcomes. The incidents include an arrest for failure to make required disposition of property, an arrest for criminal mischief and alcohol intoxication, a former federal corrections supervisor sentenced for leading cover-ups of inmate assaults, multiple indictments involving methamphetamine-related charges, and a residential fire resulting in the death of two juveniles.

Former Kentucky federal corrections supervisor sentenced to 5-1/2 years for leading cover-ups of inmate assaults. Cause of fatal fire unknown, no foul play suspected. Kevin X. Pearce, a former Bureau of Prisons supervisor, has been sentenced to five and a half years in prison followed by one year of supervised release. Pearce was convicted after a six-day trial for leading two cover-ups of assaults on inmates held at U.S. Penitentiary Big Sandy in Debord. His co-defendants, former corrections officers Samuel Patrick and Clinton Pauley, had previously pleaded guilty to deprivation of rights under color of law.

Mrs. Dunn was born on November 22nd, 1941 on the Ivy Point Farm in Salyersville Ky, the fifth and final child of the late Julia May Gardner and Byron Richards Gardner. She attended Salyersville High School and Eastern Kentucky University. On October 19th, 1960 she married Luther Dean Dunn, with whom she had three daughters, Bridget Adams, Susan Begley, and Lisa Graham.

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. — An inmate’s craving for a nicotine fix could end up keeping him in jail for several more years. A guard at the Floyd County Detention Center was doing a routine walk-through last week, when inmate David Chandler, 42, of Paintsville, allegedly came up and told him he would pay the guard $20 if he dropped a cigarette in the floor and walked away.
