Alex Karnes threw a complete-game shutout and benefited from six unearned runs in the sixth as his Evansville Blue Devils beat Rock Valley rival Edgerton 6-0 on Monday.

Karnes also was Evansville’s leadoff hitter and scored a run and drove in another.

Both he and Edgerton starter Noah Towns were in complete control of the opposing batting order through five innings in a 0-0 game. The decisive inning started when Karnes lined a single to center field.

One error on a ball bunted by Wyatt Nelson put runners on the corners for Evansville (4-7 overall, 3-3 Rock Valley), then another on Bennett Keller’s batted ball allowed Karnes to score and make it 1-0.

With Keller and Nelson on first and third, both runners stole the base in front of them on the same play to make it 2-0.

Lincoln Keller had an RBI single later in the inning, and Kurt walked consecutive batters with the bases loaded that upped Evansville’s lead to 5-0. Karnes came up again and grounded out with the bases loaded, scoring the Blue Devils’ final run.

Edgerton (2-5, 2-4) is next scheduled to host Beloit Turner at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday; Evansville is set to play at Brodhead at the same time.
