During her stay, she will create artwork for an upcoming solo exhibition at the Mouse House Gallery in Detroit. Gunning, who also teaches art at community centers, said the chance to connect with a community is an important part of choosing a residency. “As an art teacher, community engagement is at the core of my character, so community-centered residencies allow me to educate no matter where I am,” Gunning said. “The Peanut Factory specifically combines my community interests with the space and time to develop new artistic concepts in a creative environment.” Gunning describes her work as sculptural self-portraiture, with forms inspired by the body’s movements and interactions.
