Edenton Tractor to close after 75 years
Edenton Tractor & Implement Company will close Oct. 31 after 75 years in business, the White family announced in a letter to customers, friends and community members. The business, located at 517 Virginia Road in Edenton, has been owned and operated by the White family for the past 50 years. The family’s announcement expressed appreciation for employees and generations of customers who supported the company throughout its history. “It has been a privilege to serve this community, build lasting friendships and share in so many meaningful moments with generations of customers,” the family wrote. The letter thanked those who patronized the business, recommended it to others and supported the family over the years. “Your loyalty and friendship made our 75 year journey possible, and the memories we have created together will always hold a special place in our hearts,” the family wrote. The announcement did not give a reason for the closing or describe plans for the property. The family described the closing as bittersweet and said it was grateful for the community’s years of support. “On behalf of the entire White family, thank you for being part of our story,” the letter concluded.

Where we worked: Wilson Marble & Granite Company.
Freddie Sauls‘ death certificate reveals that he, like Clarence B. Best, worked for a marble company in Wilson. City directories show that Sauls and Turner Mitchell were employed as stone polishers as early as 1912. They likely worked for E.L. Cobb’s Wilson Marble and Granite Company (also known circa 1920 as Wilson Marble, Mantle & Tile), which was established in 1908 and succeeded J.C. Lanier’s Wilson Marble Company, which was active as early as 1891. Cobb’s business operated at 108 West Nash Street, then 106 North Railroad.

Dickinson Avenue building owners want rezoning change
The owner of a century-old building in the downtown Dickinson Avenue corridor is seeking a zoning change that could allow more growth in the district. ELKCO LLC, a Charlotte- based company, requested a nearly 7,000-square-foot structure on Dickinson Avenue, about 60 feet southwest of Ficklen Street, be changed from downtown commercial fringe to downtown commercial zoning. The Greenville Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously voted to recommend the request at its Oct. 20 meeting. The request now goes to Greenville City Council for final approval. According to Pitt County tax records, the building, which was built in 1922, has four address numbers: 807, 809, 811 and 813. It has housed a variety of tenants, including the studio of sculptor Jonathan Bowling. The building was zoned downtown commercial fringe in the late 1960s, according to the commission’s meeting materials. Assistant Director of Planning Chantae Gooby said there are a few areas with downtown commercial fringe zoning left in the area. When a building almost runs to the property line, it’s a much more appropriate zoning, she said, because downtown commercial doesn’t have setbacks, vegetation or parking requirements. The downtown commercial zoning generally is for entertainment, recreation, urban office and retail uses. Microbreweries
