Oklahoma County voters soundly defeat jail sales tax

Oklahoma County voters soundly defeated a county sales tax to finish and operate a new jail campus that includes a nearly complete Behavioral Care Center, according to unofficial results from the Oklahoma State Election Board. The vote on Tuesday, Nov. 3, thwarts the county's plan to fully complete the campus at 1901 E. Grand Blvd. in southeast Oklahoma City and eventually replace the aging 13-story jail tower at 201 N. Shartel Ave. downtown. Unless another sales tax election is called and succeeds, the county will be left with a hybrid operation, with the old jail downtown and the care center, diversion, intake, kitchen, and laundry at 1901 E. Grand. With all precincts reporting, the tally was: For: 84,143, or 37.7%. Against: 139,181, or 63.3%. Official election results will not be certified until Nov. 6. Democratic wave could bring changes to Oklahoma County government

Oklahoma County government could have a distinctly different feel in a few months after Democrats swept general election races. Voters flipped the Board of Oklahoma County Commissioners in an election that ended Republican Party rule, which had held since the 1970s. Plus, if freshly elected Democrats vote as a bloc, the Nov. 3 election will lead to a shift in the balance of power on the usually nonpartisan County Budget Board, where personalities often dictate action more than partisan politics. Come Jan. 4, 2027, the commissioners' board will have a 2-1 Democratic majority, with Jennifer Mayo, 35, representing District 3 , which has not been held by a Democrat since 1981. She will join Democratic Commissioner Jason Lowe of District 1 and District 2's Brian Maughan , who will be the lone Republican. Also on Jan. 4, Democratic Assessor-elect John Gibbons will take office after beating incumbent Larry Stein. An Oklahoma family ranks among the biggest landowners in the country, according to the latest 2026 data from World Population Review . The Drummond family, which includes Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond and the "Pioneer Woman" Ree Drummond, owns 433,000 acres of land in the state within Osage, Pawnee and Noble counties. The Drummond family's land ownership in Oklahoma dates back to ancestor Frederick Drummond, a Scottish immigrant who came to the former Osage Nation in Indian Territory in 1886. World Population Review ranked the family as the 23rd biggest landowner in the country, but noted that the Drummonds were not included in recent Land Report top 100 lists, which could indicate a change in ownership. There have been no reports that the Drummonds no longer own their land.
