Fire breaks out on building in the Southside of Elmira

UPDATE (4/25): The Elmira Fire Department has provided an update on the structure fire that took place yesterday afternoon on the Southside.

The fire was located on the second floor of the building, as well as the back of the building on the outside, sustaining significant damage to about 25 to 50% of the building.

It took about 40 minutes for crews from both Elmira and Southport to extinguish the fire.

One person from the downstairs of the building was taken to the hospital by Erway Ambulance for injuries that were sustained while escaping the building.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by NY State Fire with assistance from Elmira Fire Investigators and the Elmira Police Department.

ELMIRA, N.Y. ( WETM ) – A fire broke out on a building this afternoon on the Southside of Elmira leaving it with heavy damage.

The fire was reported around noon on Wednesday, April 24, and occurred at a building located on the corner of Franklin Street and Herrick Street.

According to an 18 News reporter on the scene, the building sustained heavy damage in the back where flames were seen by eyewitnesses, and the upstairs windows were broken out.

The flames have since been put out on the building but smoke is still visible.

Four units from the Elmira Fire Department responded to the fire, along with Elmira Police who have shut down the road on all sides while fire crews continue to work on the building.

An ambulance was seen leaving the area but it is unknown if there were any injuries as a result at this time. The cause of the fire is also unknown.
