POCATELLO — A federal grand jury sitting in Pocatello returned a six-count indictment on February 27, 2024, charging Jerrod Randall Farr, 52, and Michael Timothy Scott, 67, both of Challis, with Lacy Act violations, U.S. Attorney Josh Hurwit announced today. Challis might change council meetings to same time as school board
The monthly meeting of the Challis City Council might be changed to occur at the exact same time and date that the Challis school board meets. Challis City Clerk Savannah Pedersen told City Council members last week she wanted to change the council’s meetings from the second Tuesday of the month to the second Wednesday of the month so that the county emergency manager could attend City Council meetings. Currently, the Challis and Mackay city councils meet on the same night each month. Challis meetings begin at 5:30 p.m. and Mackay meetings begin at 6 p.m., so the emergency manager can’t get to both city meetings, she said.

Rainbow Trout Stocking Coming to Hayden and Kids Creek Ponds in March
The Idaho Department of Fish and Game plans to stock 950 rainbow trout in Hayden Creek Pond and Kids Creek Pond from March 18-22. Hayden Creek Pond, near Lemhi, will receive 650 trout. This location has a new bridge, restroom, and a dock for anglers with limited mobility.
Challis elementary principal resigns
A new elementary school principal must be hired in Challis before the start of next school year, following Tyler Gaston’s resignation from the position. Gaston began work in August 2021 as the Challis High School principal. Last school year he and Superintendent Lani Rembeslki swapped principal roles. Rembelski doubles as a principal, currently at CHS, after being the elementary principal for a few years.

Challis resident Levi Maydole announced last week he is running for the Custer County sheriff’s position. Maydole said he will file for the Republican nomination in the primary election after the filing period opens on March 4. Candidates who plan to run in the May 21 primary election must file between March 4 and 15. People can file as a write-in candidate for a week after the filing period closes this year.

GOP committee changes position, will submit sheriff nominees
An interim sheriff in Custer County will be appointed after all, now that the Custer County Republican Central Committee changed its position on the matter. Custer County Sheriff Stu Lumpkin notified county commissioners on Nov. 30, 2023, of his intent to resign from office before his term ends in January 2024. Lumpkin said he will retire on April 30.
Challis frosh ties for high jump honor
Challis High School freshman Lilly Stebbins finished second in the girls high jump contest at the Jan. 19 BYU indoor invitational track meet. Stebbins jumped 5’6”, matching the height jumped by the first-place winner at the Provo, Utah, meet. It was a new personal record for Stebbins and exceeds the highest jump by any Idaho high school girl during the 2023 track and field season, according to Ryan Stebbins. Ryan Stebbins is Lilly’s dad and a Challis Middle School track and field coach.

Early Start to Steelhead Fishing Season on Upper Salmon River: Updates for Local Anglers
The Upper Salmon River has seen higher temperatures than usual, causing an early start to the spring steelhead fishing season. The ice jam at Deadwater opened a month earlier than expected, suggesting an earlier spring fishery this year. Despite a minor temperature drop last weekend, the river stayed ice-free, with most of the downstream ice from Deadwater melted.
County commission and vote boundaries stay the same in 2024
Boundaries for the three Custer County commissioner districts and election precincts within the county will remain the same this year, county commissioners decided last month. Commissioners Steve Smith and Randy Corgatelli reviewed data and heard from Elections Supervisor Kristen Walker at their Jan. 11 meeting. County commissioners must set commission and precinct boundaries in January, in accord with state law.

Jake Zollinger has been appointed to fill out the remainder of Wayne Butts’s term on the Custer County Commission. Zollinger was appointed by Gov. Brad Little on Jan. 26. He was the top recommendation from the Custer County Republican Central Committee which passed three names on to the governor following Butts’s Jan. 8 death.
