ELK POINT, S.D. (KCAU) — An Elk Point woman running for the District 17 seat in the South Dakota House of Representatives is facing a charge of obstructing an officer, jailer or firefighter after an incident last week.

According to court documents, Robin Schiro fled from Clay County authorities and the South Dakota State Patrol on Highway 50 before being arrested later that day outside the North Sioux City city hall by Union County deputies.

Authorities first pursued Schiro after being alerted of an outstanding warrant for speeding in Lawrence County, South Dakota. According to paperwork, Schiro told deputies that the pursuit earlier in the day was a “big misunderstanding”. The report goes on to say that Schiro became agitated and accused the officers of working for the IRS and trying to sabotage her political campaign.

Schiro was booked into the Union County Jail before being released on an unsecured bond. She’s due back in court in Union County on May 30 at 9 a.m. Charges from Clay County are pending.
