AMATEUR BASEBALL: Moeller, HBPs lift A’s over Cubs
Collin Moeller didn’t wear a cape during Sunday’s best-of-three finale between the homestanding Pipestone Athletics and Worthington Cubs. Still, Moeller played the role of hero — lacing a three-run single to deep center field scoring Keegan O’Brien, Landon Quist and Greg Quist as the Athletics topped the Cubs, 5-4, in this Region 13C first-round rubber game.
CLUB BASKETBALL: Pipestone’s Kor ready for grand stage
Current Pipestone Area Schools girls’ basketball player Jadyn Kor will bring her game to the national stage. Kor and the 16-under “Black” Sanford Sports Academy team based in Sioux Falls, has been chosen to compete in the 2024 USA Basketball Club Championships from Saturday through Monday, July 27-29.

Pipestone Area Youth Tackle Football players will begin season practices on Monday, Aug. 12. Chargers win Colman baseball tournament
The annual Midwest Corn Classic baseball tournament was held on July 23 in Colman at the Field of Dreams north of town. The ground for the Field of Dreams was donated to the city of Colman by an area farmer for the purpose of building a baseball field similar to the field in the movie "Field of Dreams," which was set in Iowa.
Applications now open for SD Game, Fish and Parks youth deer hunt
South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks partners with the Missouri River Corridor Youth Hunt to offer a free first-time deer hunting opportunities for youth. The program is limited to four youth ages 10 to 15. Participants learn how to select the correct ammunition and firearm for deer hunting while learning firearm safety.
Pig Rescued Recently from the Big Sioux River Has Passed Away
Some sad news. The pig that was rescued last week from the banks of the Big Sioux River has passed away. Dakota News Now reports that a small pig was spotted on the banks of the Big Sioux on Thursday, (July 18) which prompted Sioux Falls Animal Control and Sioux Falls Fire Rescue to snap into action to perform a water rescue just north of Falls Park a short time later.

Hefty Seed Business Development Lead Jeff Preston serves Minnesota and the Dakotas. At the Ag PhD Field Day in Baltic, South Dakota, Preston said his geography covers a variety of conditions. “It’s very diverse agriculture with sugarbeets, dry edible beans, potatoes and more so our people have to know recommendations because of carryover and things like that in chemistry,” said Preston. “Down here it’s predominantly corn and beans.” Preston, who is based in Hillsboro, North Dakota, said soil types also vary greatly across the region.”The (Red River) Valley is very unique and we work all the way out to the Montana border. We go from irrigation to heavy clay/high magnesium soils to bull sand. So it’s very diverse and it takes different agronomy skills and expertise to work with farmers.”

Madison Post 25 falls to Dell Rapids, will play Volga today in Region Tournament
The Madison Post 25 baseball team lost to Dell Rapids 6-1, in the semi’s of the Region 2B American Legion baseball tournament on Thursday. Dell Rapids took control early, scoring two runs in the 1st inning off a Madison error and a single from CJ Smith. Dell’s then scored a run in four consecutive innings starting in the 3rd. Madison’s lone run came on an error in the 6th.
South Dakota awards $2M in grants for long-term care, but facilities sought $5M more
The South Dakota Department of Human Services recently awarded $2 million in grants for technology and equipment in the long-term care industry, which has been afflicted with closures and staffing shortages. Funding for the grants was approved by the Legislature and Gov. Kristi Noem during the 2024 legislative session, after being recommended by an interim legislative committee studying the sustainability of long-term care.
