EDWARDS, Colo. — The Colorado Department of Transportation closed the westbound lanes of Interstate 70 near Edwards Tuesday morning due to a forming sinkhole.

The sinkhole was forming off the shoulder of the roadway, a spokesperson for CDOT said. Engineers, which were scene assessing the damage, have since confined the sinkhole and CDOT's maintenance team was backfilling the sinkhole with soil as of 4 p.m.

The westbound lanes were closed between Exit 163 at Edwards and Exit 147 near Eagle as a safety precaution for drivers, and westbound traffic was being diverted onto US 6 at Wolcott.

The detour is approximately 10 miles and oversized loads are not permitted through the detour, which is expected to last through Tuesday afternoon, according to a CDOT official.

The full size of the sinkhole was 20 feet long by 13 feet wide and 8 feet deep, the CDOT spokespesron said. No water was found in the soil and the hole was dry.
